Coyote Pouncing

Coyote Pouncing, Coe Park, Copyright Saelon Renkes 2006. Archival inks on watercolor paper.

I was able to observe this coyote for about 20 minutes one day, as it was hard at work hunting. It was quite aware of my presence, but didn't mind as long as I didn't get too close (this was taken with a 200mm lens). It had been tracking a sound in the ground, listening with first one ear and then the other before finally pouncing. When it came back up with nothing but a mouthful of dirt it looked up at me as if it was all MY fault, then it moved away where it was too hard for me to follow.
